A
Paradise for birds!
Toucans,
Humming birds, Tanagers and Pewees are only a few of the species of
birds I have watched during my stay at the Diquis Del Sur
in February 2007 & in January 2008.
The
Diquis rests on a vast elevated plateau between the Pacific Ocean and
the Andes Mountains. Such a
position allows us to watch the birds resting on tree tops.
One
can also observe them all over the Diquis site, which is practically a
real botanical garden with more than 150 species of fruit trees and
other exotic tropical trees and plants.
I
have observed more than 150 species of birds during my stay at the
Diquis. Surely, I haven’t
seen them all and my feeling is that one could add some twenty more
species. The most common
one is the Great Chickadee, yellow, brown and black, followed by the
Bald Robin, the national bird of Costa Rica,. One can also
observe the blue, red and black Tanager with red hindquarters, the
Toucan with its spectacular beak and the Golden-hooded Tanager with its
golden hairdo, blue wings and yellow head, not forgetting the cocky
Arians and other species of Humming Birds.
Moreover, on occasion, one can also admire the magnificent
Scarlet Macaw. In short,
the site is a real paradise for birds and for observers of Nature in
action!
